Koh Samui. Island of wet.

The island of Koh Samui is not always wet.

In fact, in all our time travelling around Thailand during the dry season, we’d never really encountered rain before.

We just happened to arrive here in the middle of some kind of tropical storm.

There was rain, lots of rain, turning the streets into lakes. Thunder that made our walls shake. And waves worthy of the red flags posted on the beach to strongly discourage swimmers.

On our first morning, I went for a run. Skies seemed clear. At my halfway point, I turned back to face a black wall of rain, no way around it. I ran straight through, and got home drenched!

There was also an incident involving the old school jet bathtub in our room, which we thought the boys might enjoy, since the beach was off limits. We couldn’t get the jets to work, but they didn’t mind. Then…all hell broke loose, with a loud roar, everything started up. Gallons of water were shooting up to the ceiling, neon lights at the bottom were flashing from purple, to green, to blue. Nothing we tried would make it stop. I had to run out of the room to get someone, who called someone, to come fix it. By then, our room was a swimming pool, and I was completely drenched. Again.

[No photo here. Needed a moment to regroup.]

There was no fighting it, we were going to get wet. We had to go with it.

So we took walks in the rain, and didn’t bother telling the boys to avoid the puddles.

We went down to the beach and made a contest out of outrunning the incoming waves.

When the downpour was too bad. We stayed in, and played Go fish or “Bataille”.

At night, the rain often stopped, so we got to explore the town a little bit and get some good food.

The food never disappoints here in Thailand. From Tom Kha Gai (coconut chicken soup), Papaya Salad (made from unripe papaya), Green, Red, Yellow curries. Everything is so good!

For the boys, the big winner is the fruit shakes.

But they’ll also try anything that isn’t too spicy. Stir frys, skewers, even grilled squids and fish.

Breakfast is also amazing. If you like a side of Pad Thai, Fried rice, and Dragon Fruit to go with your toast and coffee. Which we do!

Now we’re on to Koh Chang. So far, so good. No rain, lots of trees and hills, and beaches to explore. More on that later.
